In rainy season, St. Augustine can grow an inch every few days. Skip a week and the next mow removes half the blade, which stresses the grass and leaves brown tips. Weekly mowing keeps every cut small.
Mow when it is dry enough
Wet grass clumps, clogs the mower, and leaves ruts. Wait until the blades are dry to the touch, usually late morning after a night rain. If the yard is soggy, a day of delay is better than tire ruts that last a season.
Raise the deck
Rain plus heat is when the lawn needs its shade most. Mow at 4 inches through the summer. Lower cuts invite dollarweed, which loves wet soil.
Watch the sprinklers
If it rained an inch, turn the irrigation off for a few days. Overwatered lawns in summer get fungus, the brown patches that spread in circles. A rain sensor on the timer handles this automatically.
